PITUITARY GLAND= MASTER

The anterior and posterior pituitary glands are responsible for releasing different hormones from the body, and their release is coordinated via the chemical messengers from the hypothalamus.  An overview of the hormones released can be found in the picture below:

In all cases, the hormonal signal begins at the hypothalamus, is transferred down to the pituitary gland via neurosecretory cells and the pituitary then secretes the relevant hormone either via the anterior or the posterior section into the bloodstream across the pituitary fossa (which is a bony depression that holds the pituitary gland in place).
